Becoming ‘that guide’
I’ve been fortunate, for the last 23 years, to have the best job in the world! I grew up on my parent’s ranch in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, so I guess the call of the wild chimed early for me.
Armed with a fishing rod or camera, I took every available opportunity to explore my bushveld surroundings. After completing my Forestry studies in the Southern Cape, I worked as a forester for a few years, but was soon drawn back to the bush.
In 2000 I began a 10-year career with Singita Game Reserves, cutting my teeth in the Kruger National Park, which boasts some of the best leopard viewing on the African continent. From there, I went on to become the head guide, guide trainer and specialist guide for Singita, based in the Serengeti, Tanzania.
I have been private guiding since 2010, and there are few African wildlife hotspots I have not visited. Leading safaris throughout Southern, Central, West and East Africa, and the Indian Ocean Islands, I have developed a special passion for Madagascar during my professional career.
I am based in South Africa, living in Elgin, just outside of Cape Town. After hours I enjoy mountain biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking and trail running.
